Click here to check out the video for "Tree Song"

Press fell hard for Ane here last time around...

Rolling Stone: “...elegantly strange songs mix surreal whimsy with Scandinavian darkness”

Singer, songwriter, guitarist and vocalist, Ane Brun, hails from Norway but makes her home in Stockholm. She started her indie label DetErMine Records together with The Tiny´s lead singer Ellekari Larsson in 2002 where she released her Scanadvian debut “Spending Time with Morgan”. The album was subsequently released all over Europe to rave reviews and was nominated for the Swedish Independent Music awards “Manifest” in 2003.

Her second album “A Temporary dive” was released in Europe, the US and in Japan. The album got wonderful reviews all over the world, and it gave her a Norwegian Grammy for best Female Artist 2005. She was nominated as best Norwegian Act on European MTV Music Awards 2005, best Norwegian song of the century (Norwegian National Radio) and best Swedish Female Pop Artist at the Grammis.

In November 2005 she released “Duets” which is an album consisting of 10 duets with 10 wonderful artists. The single “Lift” with Norwegian band Madrugada became a radio favorite, and gave her another Norwegian Grammy. The album “Duets” consists of songs feat. Teitur, Tobias Fröberg, Liv Widell, Wendy McNeill, Ron Sexsmith, Syd Matters, Tingsek, Ellekari Larsson from The Tiny, Madrugada and Lars Bygden.

The last few years Ane Brun has been touring all over the world. After a tour with the DMF String Quintet, Staffan Johansson and Nina Kinert around Scandinavia in 2006, she released her first live album ”Live in Scandinavia”, winter 2007. The album is a collection of the songs from Ane’s 3 three albums, but this time dressed up in new arrangements for strings.

Ane’s fifth album, and third studio album, and second US release ”Changing of the Seasons” will be released in 2008. The album is produced by Valgeir Sigurdsson (Björk, Sigur Ros, Múm, Bonnie Prince Billy, Coco Rosie, Maps, and more).

Fiasco- Brooklyn's own release Native Canadians on Impose Records

After selling out two pressings of their full length debut, God Loves Fiasco, on their own imprint Beautiful Records, Brooklyn power trio and DIY faves Fiasco release their rapid-fire gem Native Canadians on Impose Records!

The New York Times - “Fiasco are "the kingpins of the Park Slope scene."

To start things off right, this Saturday, Fiasco will perform at The Bodega with MONOTONIX in conjunction with My Open Bar. Just three days after, the boys will kick off their string of August dates in Brooklyn again with a show at Market Hotel with their friends Ninjasonik, The Homosexuals and Pony Pants. For their first our, Fiasco will warm (tear up) stages with Deerhunter and The Apes...to name a few. From all ages shows to local house parties to parking lots, don't miss Fiasco.

Native Canadians will be in stores on Oct 14th

Click Here To Listen To “Oh You Horny Monster”

Keep your eyes peeled for the video coming soon!

Spin: “incendiary guitar work, drum thrashing and perceptive lyrics... echo everyone from a hormone-drenched Sonic Youth to a youthful-sounding Slint. Standout "Nothing to Lose" trods on classic indie rock aesthetic a la Pavement... proving that punk rock and teenage boys go together like PB & J."

They're not out of high school but they've already been through the press circus. They've never gone on a major tour but their Brooklyn shows at d.i.y. spaces still hit overflow capacity. You could blame it on the hype, but Fiasco never would've left their parent's basement if these kids were just another garage band.

Born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, Jonathan Edelstein (guitar / vocals), Lucian Buscemi (bass / vocals) and Julian Bennett Holmes (drums) hit a universal nerve in the noise rock continuum; it's a sonic sweet spot that's apparently everything for everyone. Impose Records signed them “because we loved the hardcore influences of the early 90s they recall - and were born in.”

The trio formed in 2005 at the tender age of 14 and by 2007 were self releasing their own records. Fiasco also play regularly throughout the tri-state area with their d.i.y. brethren - 2008 alone has seen them share the stage with No Age, Casiotone for the Painfully Alone, High Places, Pony Tail, Parts & Labor, Kimya Dawson, Aa, Yacht and label mates Team Robespierre, to name a few.

Having just finished recording in their basement (mastered by Josh Bonati of Aa), Fiasco will release their instrumental sophomore record, Native Canadians, in a special vinyl + CD packaging. The spastic anthems that recall their heavy rock antecedents are fully present, but Canadians also showcases their technical prowess and instinctual sense of melody and arrangement. It's an early collector's classic for a band burning with possibility and currently blowing up.

Native Canadians is set for release on Oct. 14th.

AUGUST TOUR!
8.2- The Bodega w/ MONOTONIX- Brooklyn, New York (My Open Bar)
8.5- Market Hotel w/ Ninjasonik, The Homosexuals, Pony Pants- Brooklyn, New York

CW Stoneking returns to the states for a long residency in LA

He's been called a hobo, local time traveler and authentic with a reputation that travels faster than the man himself. Once seen, he is unforgettable.

CW Stoneking will transport you back to a by gone era, with 20's style piano, delta blues guitar and rough voiced growl. It's like nothing you've seen in the past 90 years!

Critics across the globe and in his native Australia have fallen in love with his standout album King Hokum.

CW Stoneking returns to the states with his one of a kind LIVE show. If you missed his mini-US tour last spring, here is your chance to catch him again.

"I'm listening to this and I don't know what year it is or country I am in. Who f**king cares. I like it" - Vice

"...approaches his prose with passion and respect"- Time Out NY

CW will perform a residency at Redwood Bar and Grill in LA from September 1st to September 8th. Then he’ll make his way EAST to perform dates in NYC at the Rockwood Music Hall and the Jalopy Theater in Brooklyn.

More dates to come.....
September 1 to 8th at The Redwood - Los Angeles

Listen to "Goin to the Country"

Listen to "Dodo Blues"

A true entertainer and raconteur, CW Stoneking plays guitar like a demon, wears natty threads, hollers like a 1920s tent show blues shouter and mutters to himself onstage. Drawing inspiration from influences that include pre-war blues, hillbilly, old jazz and prison work songs, the idiosyncratic CW Stoneking is a revelation and a delight, invoking the spirit of the 1920s Deep South blues like he’s just been beamed in from the past like a lost time traveller.

Based in Melbourne, Australia, Stoneking is an inimitable singer/songwriter, evoking an original and diverse hokum style, using his trusty steel bodied dobro, his tenor banjo and a three piece Primitive Horn Orchestra. His debut album, King Hokum, was ARIA-nominated for Best Blues and Roots Album (2007), and winner of the AIR Award for Best Independent Blues & Roots Release (2007).

King Hokum is set in a fictional 1920s Southern US town where dodo birds sing, hobos holler and handymen swing their axes in lone backyards. As the Sydney Morning Herald noted: “His songs feel ancient and lived-in. His speaking voice is a drawling blend of laconic Australian and straw-chewing Arkansas. His manner is as laid-back as any country cliche. If it’s a character, it’s a character he seemingly lives 24 hours a day. A former girlfriend describes him as ‘a bit of a mystery [but] he’s a bit of a genius’.”

The album was released in Europe via the Swiss Voodoo Rhythm label and CW Stoneking toured the continent and Britain during the summer of 2007, making waves at festivals and headline shows alike, while in Australia he has built up a fanatical following with his hugely charismatic and humour-laced live performances.

“The blues is all different kinds of things,” he says, “so I’m happy to write a sad tune if I’ve got a good story, but I think to entertain, I don’t just want to sing about sad things all the time.”

Born to American parents in Katherine, Northern Territory, in 1974, CW was raised in the Aboriginal community of Papunya, (about 240 km northwest of Alice Springs). After his parents separated early on, his musical father raised him whilst teaching in the settlements. “I used to hear a lot of records from my dad with a lot of the 60s vocal groups from the States and things like that. He used to sing tunes with the guitar for me at bedtime when I was very small, like ‘Candyman’, and ‘Froggie Went a’Courtin’.”

It wasn’t until after he moved to Balmain in Sydney aged 11 that Stoneking began learning guitar. His interest in the blues was sparked as a teenager after stumbling across some tapes of two country-blues legends; Blind Willie McTell and Memphis Minnie. Stoneking’s music embraces Robert Johnson-esque delta and Mississippi blues, delivered with a voice soaked in sailor’s rum, full of woe and redolent of the callous-worn, tough skin of hard-won experience, and apparently broadcast from a perfectly preserved 1920s crystal set.

He’s been called a hobo, local time traveller, fake and authentic with a reputation that travels faster than the man himself. Once seen, he is unforgettable.

“He’s a national treasure,” says Australian musical legend, J. Walker, who produced King Hokum. “The first time I met him, I was amazed because he had a fob watch in his waistcoat and I remember thinking, this guy’s straight out of the dust bowl of the 1930s. I think that style of music that he does is the bedrock of everything that came afterwards,” Walker adds, “I’m just amazed that he exists because I never thought I'd see anything like it.”

EVENT OVERVIEW

Below is an X-Ray of Brooklyn winner Bettie B. Goode’s toe, taken immediately after the Brooklyn Regional on July 9th. You’ll notice that her 4th toe is at a sideways 90-degree angle. If you thought this was a game, I’m afraid you’re sadly mistaken. And for those who didn’t know what we meant when we said of Airness, “you’ll know it when you see it.” Well, now you’ve seen it. CNN, TMZ, New York Daily News, and Gothamist were among the media that have run stories about her toe (or lack thereof):

The 2008 Cuervo Black US Air Guitar Championship Tour, presented by TouchTunes, took on a life of its own. One contestant, bless his soul, competed in eight different Regionals without a single top-five finish. A father of three defied all physics and flew, costing himself a perfectly good ankle upon landing. One talent rode into the venue and up to the stage riding a Harley Davidson motorcycle (talk about a carbon footprint). Meanwhile, a man in Los Angeles made flames rise from his fingers, only to be outshined by a ‘ROCKIT’ (sic) who finished his routine hanging head over heels from the rafters. We saw Vikings, Leprechauns, a professional stripper, an inflatable fat-suit, an official NBA Mascot, and, in an old church in Pittsburgh, we heard the very Voice of God.

From the fray, US Air Guitar has assembled an unprecedented array of talent: 25 of the nation’s fiercest and finest face-melters will go head-to-head on August 8th to prove to one and all that they should represent the red, white, blue, and undecided’s at the World Air Guitar Championships in Finland.

Defending 2007 US Champion WILLIAM OCEAN will again have to fend off a crop of talented newcomers, all gunning for his crown. But those are the least of his worries, as arch rival and local Bay Area hero HOT LIXX HULAHAN is back, and by all accounts, better than ever. McNALLICA and BIG RIG both look to improve upon their top-5 results from last year. Living legend THE ROCKNESS MONSTER looks to go out on top in this, his final US Air Guitar competition.

The city of San Francisco is also a story line in itself. Past SF Regional winners Hot Lixx Hulahan (2006), RICKY STINKFINGERS (2007), and this year’s winner AWESOME (2008) have all made it to this year’s finals. Hot Lixx took the DC Regional, and Stink traveled to Portland to punch his ticket.

Black Iris introduces digital 7" singles label

Just what IS Black Iris? How do I find their digital singles?
Are they free? Can I post them and share ‘em with my readers? Who’s on their roster? Who the heck are Fools Gold and Flower of Doom?

With studio’s in NY, LA and Virginia, Black Iris is a collective of musicians rooted in the indie music scene who, outside of their bands, have been recording compositions and original scores to all kinds of media. From producers to engineers to composers, the collective has been ever growing since it’s formation. From all this creativity and good music spawned the Black Iris Singles Label.

The Black Iris label will be in both digital and 7inch format.

The first two singles will be released shortly. The first is from Fools Gold, which is many of the members of indie darlings Foreign Born. The second will be from Flowers of Doom which is Cornbread Compton of Cursive and Josiah Steinback of Heavens, with a revolving selection of singers. The first Flowers of Doom single has the vocal styling of Tim Presley of Darker My Love.

You can find these singles at www.blackiris.tv/project/label in 2 weeks but we will have a temp page up to get the tracks now.

Why Black Iris?
The Black Iris Label is a platform for this collective of artists to showcase the music that they are making beyond the confines of the work they do for advertising, film and TV. The collective is a diverse group of musicians who are always making music either for TV, film, web or for their own projects or even as producers of friends projects. These musicians all work within the collective and want their various projects to be heard! Black Iris will create this outlet by sponsoring tours, curating live shows and releasing these singles both digitally and in a 7inch format.

Black Iris has been making music within this format for awhile with musicians who have played in and toured with many bands including Foreign Born, Cursive, and Mazzarin to name a few. Many Black Iris songs might be familiar. You might hear snippets of them anywhere but the point is, if you dig em, you can’t find them. They have been living in some “music netherworld”, now that is not a problem. Black Iris will be making those songs available.

Black Iris was featured in print and the online version of the LA Times last week.

DELICIOUS VINYL RELEASES BOBBY EVANS "FREAK-A-ZOID ROBOTZ"

IT'S TIME...FOR ALL SENTIENT LIFE FORMS TO FREAK OUT!!!! DELICIOUS VINYL RELEASES BOBBY EVANS "FREAK-A-ZOID ROBOTZ" AVAILABLE ON 12” VINYL / CD / DOWNLOAD - AUGUST 19, 2008!

Stop Smiling - "Old school, gold school, true school, new school: Bobby Evans takes what's best about hip-hop and makes it fresh.”

Turntablelab.com - “[Delicious Vinyl All-Stars: RMXXOLOGY] The most powerful and useful remix album you'll hear this year.”

Click Here To Listen To “Freak-A-Zoid Robotz

In an explosive announcement reflecting musical upheavals fueled by decades of electro-pelvic gyrations, Delicious Vinyl proudly proclaims the imminent release of a special single by L.A.'s revolutionary producer/remixer, Bobby Evans.

Available this August 19 via download, CD, and 12-inch vinyl, "Freak-A-Zoid Robotz" is not only the lead track and theme song from Delicious Vinyl's lauded RMXXOLOGY album, it's the first single release to be solely credited to Bobby Evans, best known as the DJ half of L.A.'s hip-hop duo Brother Reade.

As the gaggle of AutoTune-, Vocoder-, and Talkbox-assisted voices reaches a fevered pitch in pop music today, Bobby Evans has leapt into the fray to bring the sexy robot thang back to where it belongs. "Freak-A-Zoid Robotz" sports whip-it-good drums, ass-clapping bass, and synapse-snapping synthesizers...and an android voice giving props to the pioneers of Miami Bass music.

Bobby Evans explains: "While making 'Freak-A-Zoid Robotz' I was taking in a steady diet of bass and early electro, Afrika Bambaataa, Gucci Crew II, Maggotron, DJ Smurf — a lot of the artists who wound up getting name-checked on my song. Even the SP-12, TR-808, and TR- 909 are mentioned on the chorus. Those machines were the foundation of the music so I knew I had to work them in. Musically 'Freak-A-Zoid Robotz' is steeped in Bass references, the drums are 808s, there's arpeggiated synths, and of course the Vocoder! Also everything in the mix was touched by the same classic reverb that Prince used on 'When Doves Cry'."

"Freak-A-Zoid Robotz" is inspired by a truly obscure cut from deep in the Delicious Vinyl catalog: an electro-bass number called "The Fine Line Between Hyper And Stupid" that appeared on the b-side of Tone-Loc's 1990 single "I Got It Going On" — although Tone did not rap on the track. Acknowledging this direct link, Bobby Evans says: "It's rad to be working with Delicious Vinyl, they have such a deep history but are still really open to new ideas and perspectives."

The single release is bolstered by instrumental and accapella versions of "Freak-A-Zoid Robotz" as well two other blistering cuts: Mr. Vegas "Hot Wuk" (Bobby Evans RMX) and Tone Loc & Peaches "Wild Thing" (Bobby Evans Minimal Edit). Featuring new artwork by Alison Childs perfect for your bedroom wall.

VICE and The Tales of Colt 45 Present: CHEESEBURGER

CHEESEBURGER, the raunchy and raucous foursome from Brooklyn, NY, bring their brand of debauchery and rock'n'roll to five cities across the U.S. in August! Cheeseburger and Colt 45 at a Vice party? Sounds like a recipe for trouble. Come out and get some!

The band will be performing shows in Los Angeles, Chicago, Atlanta, Philadelphia and New York.

All you have to do is RSVP for free entry.

The New York Times - "Audience members who aren't interested in meeting the lead singer should stay back, or else be ready to run."

Pitchfork Media - "Rather than copy some Motley Crue cliche and wind up sounding like Jet or Louis XIV, Cheeseburger toy with rock archetypes the way a big cat teases its prey."

Vice - "It's been a while since I've been able to whole-heartedly get behind a band or record. There's always that one acoustic tune or the guy in the band who wears a scarf inside or whatever that keeps you from really championing them. This is simply a few guys who hang out at Greenpoint Tavern, slow-dance with the owner and occasionally stumble down the street to write rock songs. Record of the year so far."

It seems only appropriate that youth and maturation are two of the lyrical themes that thread their way through Eric Enger’s songs: His band, Gentleman Auction House, has spent the last year navigating the space where the two words intersect. Formed in the summer of 2005 (with its current lineup solidified in January of 2006), the band itself is still young, with the average age of its seven members hitting just below the quarter-century mark.

GAH spent their first year hitting the stages in St. Louis, MO, as frequently as their schedules would allow, playing shows in front of audiences across the town. As excited performances converted excited fans, the band took its cue and recorded their debut EP The Rules Were Handed Down just in time for their performance at 2006’s Pygmalion Festival in Champaign-Urbana, IL. The self-recorded EP was self-released in October 2006, and had sold out of it’s first pressing by the time the band played their now-annual Christmas show, which happened to score a mention in SPIN magazine’s list of must-attend events in St. Louis that December. TRWHD sold enough copies before the year’s end to make it into the Top 15 best-selling records of 2006 at Vintage Vinyl, St. Louis’ premier independent record store. The EP made the list again a year later, and now has sold over 3,000 total copies to date.

The next year was spent playing local and regional shows in support of TRWHD, and though the feedback was consistently filled with praise, the band’s recipe of boy-girl vocals, dueling drummers, and multi-instrumentation had become standard indie-pop fare. Around every corner loomed a band that bore a resemblance to GAH’s own musical reflection, and every review cited the same touchstone Canadian collectives. Feeling the need to delineate the band’s sound, Enger penned a handful of new pop songs to round out material for what would become Alphabet Graveyard, the band’s full-length debut.

October 2007 found GAH in Washington, D.C., recording at Silver Sonya studios with Chad Clark (Beauty Pill, Smart Went Crazy), Devin Ocampo (Medications, Faraquet), and TJ Lipple (Aloha), who the band hoped would help them audibly infuse the enthusiasm and youthful energy of their live show and contextualize all of the different components of their new record. After two weeks of feverish recording, a robbery at gunpoint, and the unexpected illness of Chad Clark, two records emerged.

May 2008 welcomed The Book of Matches EP, which serves as the thematic and sonic precursor to the band’s new full-length. Due out in August of 2008, Alphabet Graveyard is a record that documents the maturation of a band who has shed the weight of its comparisons and forged a direction all their own to a very new place where solemn folk ballads, epic mood pieces and infectiously danceable pop very naturally find themselves on common ground.

Fresh off of a string of spring tours including a showcase at SXSW and a Daytrotter studio session, the band will spend the remainder of the year touring consistently, including a stop at Diversafest (DFest) in Tulsa, OK, and their third trip to Champaign’s burgeoning Pygmalion Festival.

RA RA RIOT THE RHUMB LINE OUT AUGUST 19th

As the August 19 release of their debut album The Rhumb Line (Barsuk) approaches, RA RA RIOT will continue their seemingly endless touring regimen with a July 26 appearance at Chicago's Wicker Park and a series of European and UK dates throughout August , ultimately returning to North America for an extensive tour kicking off September 3 in Montreal.

Early response to the material from The Rhumb Line has been uniformly positive, with the NEW YORK TIMES lauding the "earnest, aching songs" from the band's recent Siren Festival set, while a 4-star ALTERNATIVE PRESS review calls the record "simply magical" in a 4-star review and FILTER describes it as "fresh" and "unforgettable."

RA RA RIOT was formed in 2006 by Syracuse University undergrads Milo Bonacci (guitar), Rebecca Zeller (violin), Alexandra Lawn (cello), Mathieu Santos (bass), John Pike (drums) and Wesley Miles (keyboard, vocals). Upon graduating (well, most of them graduated), they began their musical career, releasing a self-titled EP and touring relentlessly. This momentum ground to a sudden and tragic halt when drummer John Pike died unexpectedly in June 2007. After an incredibly difficult summer of mourning, the remaining band members of Ra Ra Riot pulled themselves back together and spent late 2007 recording The Rhumb Line. Cameron Wisch played drums on the album, while Gabriel Duquette will be manning the kit for the upcoming tour.

On record or on stage, Ra Ra Riot is a joyful experience, somehow both intensely fun and just plain intense; it's a joy that's always aware that darkness and despair may be just around the corner, that life is both beautiful and terrible, and it's a joy that is in fact amplified by this awareness. It's this same bittersweet dynamic that makes The Rhumb Line a compelling debut album by a band with seemingly limitless potential. See for yourself this fall and in the meantime visit www.myspace.com/rarariot for a free download of "Dying Is Fine" from the new album.

The New Yorker - “The XYZ Affair, the local little power-pop band that could”

Spin.com - “radiate with charm, candor, and creativity"

New York's The XYZ Affair has come a long way since lead singer Alex Feder's high school demos that make up their roots. Originally forming out of New York University's basketball Pep Band, the band solidified their current four person lineup – Feder on vocals and guitar, Chris Bonner on bass and backup vocals, Sam Rockwell on drums and backup vocals, and Russ Maschmeyer on guitar, keyboards, and backup vocals—just over two years ago, and has since been mastering the art of writing soaring arena rock colored with the duality of confident energy and boyish vulnerability.

With an affinity for four part harmonies, wall of sound fuzz guitars, big drums, and flashy guitar solos, the quartet has since birthed their triumphant debut A Few More Published Studies (recorded by Longwave's Shannon Ferguson, mastered by Aloha's TJ Lipple, mixed by Essex Green collaborator Britt Myers) to the liking of a growing legion of devotees.

Thanks in part to the band's fun, charming essence and raucous, understated sense of humor THE XYZ AFFAIR have only just begun to make their name known. Their career thus far has seen them self-releasing Studies, selling out New York City hotspot Mercury Lounge four times in the last year, and unleashing their viral video gem for the catchy album closer "All My Friends." The self-produced YouTube clip featuring cameos from Nickelodeon network personalities Marc Summers (former Double Dare host and Food Network personality), Jason Zimbler (Clarissa Explains It All), Danny Cooksey (Salute Your Shorts), and Michael Maronna ( The Adventures of Pete & Pete) was a major springboard for the band, garnering upwards of 15,000 views in the week of its debut with steady subsequent growth.

Far beyond the innate happiness and high energy of their songs, THE XYZ AFFAIR loves to keep you guessing, sporting an understated earnestness that sneakily shadows their explosive personality both on the stage and in the studio. Just as their songs ring out with a beckoning attitude, the music itself is beckoning to be brought to the masses.

Listen to “Where She Was on Monday”

Tab released their first single, “Where She was On Monday,” on July 1st. It was an exclusive on Amazon.com homepage and is now available at all digital retailers.

It sounds like a real band using real instruments recorded in an organic way. On this second release, the guys stretched the spectrum, some songs heavier and some more poppy.

The album's theme is about a girl living in the ritzy outskirts of a big city, messing around with her absentee parents' rich friends, taking trips to the city on her own and living dangerously. The songs take on the perspectives of her, her middle-aged wealthy suitors, and the 'good guy' at her school who laments over her dalliances. Ultimately, it doesn't work out and she finds herself, once again, in the hands of another ne'er-do-well mid-life crisis fellow.

Recorded at the Boneyard in Duxbury, MA, Long Weekend was written, recorded, produced and engineered by brothers Adrian and Tony Perry. The boys also helped mix the album with Kevin Ennis (who also mixed "Pulling Out Just Enough To Win").
