Critically acclaimed singer-songwriter Alexi Murdoch is set to release his second full-length record Towards the Sun March 8th on his own Zero Summer Records. He will celebrate the new release with a sold-out performance at Lincoln Center’s prestigious American Songbook series onFebruary 17 before playing in select U.S. cities in February, including a Noise Pop Festival date in San Francisco. Murdoch recorded the majority of Towards the Sun in Vancouver in a single night while on tour in North America in 2009. Revisiting the tracks months later in New York, Murdoch fleshed out the tracks with the help of musicians known for their work in Brooklyn’s independent music scene, including Jon Natchez (Beirut), Kelly Pratt (Beirut) and Kyle Resnick (The National).
The new record is a follow-up to Murdoch’s 2006 release Time Without Consequence, which cemented Murdoch as a “Top Ten Artist to Watch” according to Rolling Stone. NPR Music called the 2006 effort “a timeless folk-pop record that’s likely to endure.” Riding a groundswell of grassroots support, Murdoch chose to self-release Time Without Consequence, which ultimately sold over 100,000 copies. After appearances on KCRW’s “Morning Becomes Eclectic” and WXPN’s “World Café,” Murdoch was tabbed by director Sam Mendes to contribute nine songs to the soundtrack for the acclaimed 2009 film Away We Go, alongside tracks by the Velvet Undground, Bob Dylan, George Harrison & the Stranglers.
Born in London and raised in Scotland, Greece and France before attending school in North Carolina, Alexi Murdoch currently splits his time between New York and a small house on the remote west coast of Scotland where he spends his days writing and working on a small wooden sailing boat.
