AUSTIN SONGBIRD CARRIE RODRIGUEZ MAKES AUSTIN CITY LIMITS

Austin native Carrie Rodriguez makes her first Austin City Limits appearance this month. Her performance, taped in July, will air the week of October 25, 2008 (check local listings in your area); the show also features Jakob Dylan. “I grew up watching Austin City Limits” Rodriguez said, “so this was a dream come true for me – definitely the highlight of my musical career so far.” Austin City Limits (PBS), the legendary public television show, is the longest-running popular music show in the United States and just kicked off its 34th season.

Highlights of the set include songs from SHE AIN’T ME, Rodriguez’s second solo album and follow-up to 2006's critically-acclaimed SEVEN ANGELS ON A BICYCLE (EMI/Manhattan/Back Porch) as well as audience favorites “Never Gonna Be Your Bride” and “Absence”. For the show, the Austin-born and Berklee trained violinist-turned-fiddler enlisted her touring band -- Hans Holzen (guitar), Kyle Kegerreis (bass), Eric Platz (drums) -- as well as special guests Gary Louris of the Jayhawks (background vocals, guitar), Greg Leisz (pedal & lap steel guitars) and Michael Ramos (keyboards).

A stellar sophomore effort, SHE AIN’T ME has been receiving rave reviews. The Associated Press said “The classically trained Rodriguez’s second solo album, “She Ain’t Me,” showcases her growth as a vocalist. Her voice has blossomed into a versatile, nuanced instrument that’s equally appealing on a swaggering rocker or love lament. It’s clear Rodriguez is a major talent.” While the Boston Globe raved “What can’t she do… Carrie Rodriguez has rapidly emerged as one of the most compelling new voices on the roots-rock scene. What’s so enticing about Rodriguez’s music is her gift for delivering emotional grit with a winsome sound. Whether flirty, forlorn, or fighting mad, her voice is cool and self-contained, full of promise and peril.”

Rodriguez is touring in support of SHE AIN’T ME through November of 2009 (see current touring itinerary below). Her segments of the popular radio shows Mountain Stage and World Café will air in October. SHE AIN’T ME recently reached #2 on the Americana radio charts and #18 on the AAA non-com charts. In November, she’ll tape the nationally syndicated radio show Acoustic Café. Look for her visibility to increase even more next year with additional TV, media, and touring introducing her music to a wider audience.

Luaka Bop presents Three Inches of Music Series

There is power, strength and diversity in threes. Most colors can be mixed from just three primary colors. Oaths are traditionally repeated three times. The Holy Trinity is the basis for one of the world’s most popular doctrines. Triangles are the most durable of geometric shapes and are the only perfect figure.

Luaka Bop’s Three Inches of Music Series contains a solid assortment of the most interesting music.

The 3 Inches on 5 inch discs will be sold separately, each in their own crystal clear jewel boxes showcasing equal measures of psychedelic sing-alongs (Terror Pigeon Dance Revolt), soulful samba (Marcio Local), and the sweet sad musings of a suicidal sixteen year-old (Yonlu).

THE TERROR PIGEON DANCE REVOLT
The Terror Pigeon Dance Revolt is a never- ending romp of a dance party; looped pianos and saxes race on top of crappy synths and ill beats, and like twenty vocal takes (seriously, like totally rivaling Broken Social Scene status) are mixed in there somewhere.

YONLU
Yonlu revealed just a fraction of his talent for experimentalism and a capacity to create delicate melancholy melodies before taking his own life at age 16, leaving behind works that are something between Badly Drawn Boy, Tortoise and Nick Drake.

MARCIO LOCAL
Marcio Local is a sexy samba beast and he has the hairy chest to prove it. His soulful style recalls Jorge Ben and his band is fully outfitted to rock with drums, guitar, bass, sax, trombone, trumpet and loads of percussion. The album was produced by Mario Caldato of Beastie Boys fame.

Luaka Bop will host it’s first CMJ Party since Cornershop in ‘94
FRIDAY OCT 24 sponsored by Good Magazine
5 to 7 pm at Santos Party House on100 Lafayette St
Justin Carter will DJ, spinning songs off the 3 Inches and from Luaka's extensive catalog prior to a performance by
Terror Pigeon Dance Revolt.

DISAPPEAR {MOV}

ANBERLIN - FEEL GOOD DRAG {MOV}

In support of their album release the band is hitting the road.

They will also be hosting a few intimate & casual after parties on select dates of the tour. Find out where & when ONLY by signing up for the Anberlin Mobile Mob!

When Anberlin signed to Tooth & Nail Records in the summer of 2002, you could almost see the stars in their eyes. Though wide-eyed awe generally accompanies a brand new, blooming band upon being given a major green light to their prospective career, there was something so instantly captivating about these Florida boys that immediately made believers of their biggest skeptics.

And with one of the most electrifying line-ups in tact, singer Stephen Christian, guitarist Joseph Milligan, bassist Deon Rexroat and protege drummer Nate Young were ready to take the world by storm; Furthermore their 2003 debut release, Blueprints for the Black Market, was a perfect launch to do so. Instantly charming audiences with their incessant choruses, shredding guitar lines and sheer pop-perfection, the album immediately received critical acclaim, something Anberlin had no problem backing up on stage as they joined tours with bands like Fall Out Boy, My Chemical Romance, and Story of the Year.

With two years, hundreds of tour dates and tens of thousands of copies of Blueprints sold since then, Anberlin are eagerly poised for what's next. With time comes obvious maturity, something vocalist Stephen Christian doesn't shy away from. I don't feel that we as Anberlin have evolved into something our fans won't recognize, Christian explains, but I definitely think we have matured musically and broadened our listening tastes, coming into our own as a band.

This evolution can be witnessed in full on their February 2005 full-length sophomore release, Never Take Friendship Personal. Created with Blueprints producer Aaron Sprinkle, who recorded their debut without ever seeing the band live, the obvious change of NTFP from its predecessor is that magic word: maturity. But after Sprinkle witnessed the band's live set for himself, something else was quick to change as well. Never seeing us live, he never knew how intense we were, says Christian. He realized that the second album had to reflect what he saw live energy.

The energy nearly leaps off the disc mere seconds into the first track as Milligan's guitar explodes through the opening riff, captivating the listener with bated breath. Each instrument and vocal delivery are not only dynamic, but filled with a real sense of confidence only experience could bring them. Even in diverse tracks like the ballad Symphony of Blas, Anberlin shine both individually and as a collective force.

For a band that seems to have no problem creating hit songs, and joining some of the biggest tours in the country, success is almost expected. Still, it's one of the facets Anberlin have yet to fully come to terms with. We are amazed at the reaction from the last album, Christian elaborates. It's crazy how many bigger bands in our genre know our music and love Blueprints Just tonight we were here in North Carolina and an older gentleman came up to me and we talked for a couple of minutes about bands and music. He went on to tell me that his son Adam had gotten him hooked on Anberlin and he had been a fan ever since. I learned after leaving the show that the man that I had met was Adam from Taking Back Sunday's dad!! I couldn't believe it! Adam got his dad hooked on our music!

And just as it had that first summer, the sparkle returns to Christian's eye, even brighter than before, but this time showing so much more than mere potential of a young band, more than the excitement of what could be. This time there is a new confidence brewing, an excitement that is not only explosive but silently assuring their rise to the top. - Adapted from anberlin.com

O'Death To Kick Off National Tour & Debut New Track On RCRD LBL

Earlier today, RCRD LBL premiered "Lowtide", the first song off O'Death's new album, Broken Hymns, Limbs and Skin (out October 28). The New York quintet take to the road at the end of October, bringing their Americana - meets - gypsy - punk hoedown across the US and Canada.

New York outfit O’Death’s third LP, Broken Hymns, Limbs and Skin, feels like a giddy junkyard hoedown, from the panicked fiddle screeches of opener “Lowtide” to the celebratory gallop of closer “Lean-To.” At times it sounds morose or contemplative, but underneath the melancholy is a gospel fervor—bashed from paint buckets, banjos, guitars and anything else in kicking distance—that defines their sound. Since 2007’s buzzed-about Head Home, the quintet, which contains vocalist/guitarist Greg Jamie, vocalist/multi-instrumentalist Gabe Darling, fiddle player Bob Pycior, bassist Newman and drummer David Rogers-Berry, has evolved the possessed americana-meets-gypsy-punk of recent years into a more urgent, unrelenting celebration of life, death and everything in between.

For their latest album, the musically diverse Broken Hymns, Limbs and Skins—which O’Death coproduced with Alex Newport (Two Gallants, the Locust)—they’ve recreated their live fervor in the studio. And although it may be the same lineup, the band that plays on Broken Hymns isn’t the same ensemble that formed in 2003 at college. In that time, they’ve evolved. “After Head Home, we only wrote three songs that year,” says Rogers-Berry. “By the end of that year, I was like, I don’t know if I can do this project. This is making me really crazy and sick and I don’t like it. As soon as we started writing new music again, I was like, That’s why we have this band. Playing music is the only thing that matters to me.”

They’ve grown up a little, but haven’t lost the underlying longing or the unruly jubilation in their songs. Jamie’s vocals sound more confident, even when singing lyrics like “I’m gonna leave you when the morning comes” on “Lean-To” or the infectious “hold on” hook on “Fire On Peshtigo,” which is based on a real fire in Peshtigo, Wisconsin, in 1871. The songs were written over the three years since they recorded Head Home, and each one shows a different side of the band as they toured almost nonstop.

“There are a lot of songs that are about putting things to rest, overcoming hardship and rising above,” Jamie says. “It’s sort of the connective theme.”As a band, they expanded beyond the old-time influences that first inspired them without forsaking them. “I think it’s all going on, on this one,” says Darling. “More of David’s world music, more of Newman’s metal, more of Bob’s grunge.”

Music aside, the album carries a deeper meaning as well. In November 2007, tragedy struck. Rogers-Berry’s fiancé, Eliza Sudol, died of an aneurysm. The group canceled their European tour plans at the time and returned to her family’s side. “I’m glad we can say ‘A Light That Does Not Dim’ is a reflection of the warmth and light she carried in her life,” says Rogers-Berry, “because a lot of the songs are fairly dark.” Jamie adds, “There’s a catharsis in what we’re trying to do musically on this album. We’re all trying to get through things with this music. We’re trying to use music as a means of healing.” Broken Hymns is dedicated in her memory.

Recording the album fostered a deeper bond in the band. Working with veteran producer Newport, the band let their instruments bleed into one another, replicating their live sound. “We’re tired of people saying our records don’t stand up to our live performances,” says Rogers-Berry. “So we tried to bring some of that energy to it.” They turned it into a celebration. “You know those giant, gallon jugs of Jack Daniels,” Newport says. “I now have a graveyard of those things in my studio.”

For “On an Aching Sea,” the producer wanted to replicate Rogers-Berry’s fondness for adding scrap metal to his drum set, so they went on a “reconnaissance mission” around Brooklyn and found everything they could, dumping it all in one of the studio’s rooms with some cymbals. When the drummer exited, there was broken glass everywhere, and one especially mutilated cymbal stand, which Rogers-Berry had snapped in half with a motorcycle chain.

In the end, they finally created an album that captured who O’Death is as a band—their dark side and their hopeful nature. From the oompah-pah of “Mountain Shifts” to the gypsy violin of “Home,” it also shows the breadth of their musical command. It’s a whole new band. “It was a hard winter,” says Rogers-Berry, “but this record saved my life.” -Adapted from odeath.net
