Ryan and Sara met Don at a show at Melvin's, a bar on St. Claude in the Marigny neighborhood of New Orleans. Ryan and Sara had just begun writing and recording songs together on an old 4-track with a mic hanging from the blade of a ceiling fan in the middle of that stifling sweaty summer, but they would soon part ways and leave New Orleans. Over the next couple of years they relocated to Providence together and later settled in Brooklyn where Don had also settled after Katrina. Life of Love is the first collection of songs Callers wrote and recorded exclusively in New York as a three- piece. Naturally the band's sound grew in volume in response to the volume of the city; however, they held on to what makes them so consistently affecting: their raw spartan style, anchored by Sara's sensually tough vocals, and Ryan and Don's Southern-honed chops as multi-instrumentalists. The album started with the band's cover of Wire's "Heartbeat", and the idea of creating something simple and cathartic. Using borrowed amps and mics, in bedrooms and in studios, and by the grace of their good friends, Callers recorded Life of Love in intense spurts over the course of a year. Unlike the experimental ballads on their debut Fortune, the new songs pulse with gritty urgency, colored by the sounds of damaged gear and the earnest spirit of a middle-school gospel choir. The result is an album stripped to the core, an expression of the inexpressible space between us and the places we inhabit and the people we share those places with.

The Walkmen play Letterman, PBS' Sun Studios Sessions; tour southeast

Critically acclaimed rock band The Walkmen will perform on the “Late Show with David Letterman” January 6 in support of their Fat Possum Records debut Lisbon. The band also recently taped a performance for PBS’ Sun Studios Sessions; the performance airs in select markets through January 4.

After completing a successful North American run and appearances on “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon” and “Last Call with Carson Daly,” the Walkmen capped 2010 with performances in New York City at Terminal 5 and Washington, DC at the 9:30 Club. The band is set to tour the southeastern United States in early 2011, please see below for a complete list of dates.

Lisbon continues to garner critical acclaim, topping many year-end best-of lists. Named the #2 album of 2010 by The Onion, Lisbon is amongst the top records of 2010 according to outlets including NPR’s “All Songs Considered,” Pitchfork, SPIN, Filter, Under the Radar, Aquarium Drunkard and Gorilla vs. Bear. Scanning over 13,000 units in its first week of release, Lisbon entered the chart at #27 making it the band’s highest debut on the Billboard Top 200.

The Walkmen’s fifth album, Lisbon was recorded over a two-year period in Philadelphia and Brooklyn. A few songs that helped establish the record’s tone were written during several inspiring and successful trips to Lisbon, Portugal. You & Me engineer Chris Zane (Passion Pit, Les Savy Fav, Tokyo Police Club) worked with the band from August to February, and then in March of 2010 the band traveled to south Dallas to finish the album with John Congleton (St. Vincent, Explosions in the Sky). 

Having grown up playing together in various bands since the fifth grade including New York’s Jonathan Fire*Eater and Boston’s The Recoys, the Walkmen broke through in 2002 with their debut album Everyone Who Pretended to Like Me is Gone. 2004’s Bows & Arrows featured indie rock anthem “The Rat” which Pitchfork recently named the #20 song of the decade. In 2006 the band recorded a song-by-song cover of Harry Nilsson and John Lennon’s 1974 classic Pussy Cats as a farewell to their Harlem studio space Marcata.

Let Me Come Home started out as a series of sketches and song fragments in frontman Jamie Sutherland’s kitchen, later taking form in demo sessions at an old distillery grain store in the Scottish Highlands. Recorded and produced by Tony Doogan (Mogwai, Delgados, Belle & Sebastian) at his Studio in Glasgow with artwork conceived by Vaughan Oliver at V23.

Broken Records formed in Edinburgh at the end of 2006 and were immediately tipped for greatness by the UK press – a series of three independently released singles released in 2008 led NME to call them “an incredible proposition – set to go stellar as soon as they decide on a lucky label to sign to”. They originally came together when Jamie had a plan to set up a small independent label and collective. They never quite got around to becoming a label, so Broken Records became the band name instead!

Minneapolis based Now, Now are proud to announce their 2011 tour dates. Brooklyn duo CREEP are set to release their debut single, Days, on Tuesday, January 25 2010 through Young Turks.  Featuring guest vocals by The xx’s Romy Madley-Croft, “Days” is a ghostly blend of Romy’s ethereal voice and CREEP’s sinister beats, blending tones of goth, shoegaze and R&B to create darkly prophetic and orchestral soundscapes.

Check out the Chicago house indebted “Days” (Azari & III remix) MP3 where it premiered on RCRD LBL.  The additional remix on the 12” comes from Deadboy, turning "Days" into a 2-step, dancefloor melancholia.

DTYF Wishes You A Very Happy New Year + 30 Seconds To Mars Concert Review

Happy 2011! May this year bring you lots of music news from DTYF!
How did you bring in the new year? 

I spent my midnight countdown with Mr. Jared Leto and his band, 30 Seconds To Mars who performed December 31st, 2010 at The Pearl inside the Palms in my hometown of Las Vegas, NV. It was an amazing show! The night started out with The Porcelain Twins performing some very sexual acts on stage which included silly string exploding strap ons. It was a very popular act with the men folk to say the very least. 30 Seconds took the stage a little after 11, playing a set a little over an hour long full with their popular tracks like Hurricane, The Kill, This Is War, Attack among others. The band's cover of Lady Gaga's Bad Romance was even played in acoustic, it was amazing and well arranged. Large black balloons were released and bounced off the hands of concert goers making it quite a fun evening. Leto told the almost sold out crowd, "2011 Is the Year for dreams.. We all need to reach for our dreams and believe in them." A powerful quote from the evening which brought on a lot of cheer into the midnight countdown. Leto had the pleasure of inviting women from the crowd onto the stage to dance while Kings and Queens closed the evening. It was a fantastic night and a great way to bring in the new year.

A Triumphant Return

As some of you know, DTYF has had some rough patches since July when my Macbook was stolen. Since then, I have had trouble trying to find a new place to update my site with since I was using iWeb. I unfortunately made the mistake of replacing my Mac with a PC laptop and have not found a successful web designer for Windows. So I am back to Blogger until I can afford to get a new Macbook. I have imported my past posts from my old DTYF blog but lost all of my posts from when I updated on iWeb. Please bare with me while I get this going again in full force. Thank you!
