New York Times
“The live band is not only able to do his songs justice, but they add an even higher intensity than the recorded versions”

“With fingernails cracked from a style of guitar that blends reckless strumming and occasional taps for frenetic effect with no guitar pick in sight, young Brad Oberhofer and his band were beat up from nine shows through the week, though you could only tell if you caught them off stage. On it, their jagged, simple, earworm indie rock either impressed (Pianos) or riveted (Public Assembly) the crowds I was in, with a voice like Avey Tare if he was young and rambunctious and paired with overdriven guitars muddled with minimal effects. The songs are all downhill rush, simple enough to get lodged in your psyche but peripherally nuanced to keep your ear.”
“Oberhofer’s songs are pattern-happy, and its two guitarists fan out: strumming high and low in syncopation, picking staggered single notes for Minimalistic interweave, switching between 4/4 and waltz, unveiling the clockwork within their songs while the music hurtles along anyway.
Brad Oberhofer, transplanted from Tacoma, Wash., to Brooklyn, sings about longings and breakups with self-aware amusement, sometimes yelping toward falsetto, but there’s no second-guessing or self-consciousness about the band’s passion for pop-song structure, both concise and expanded.”
Brooklyn Vegan
“Each song is laced with manic drums, quirky melody and sharp, angular guitar riffs that give way to pensive moments of xylophone, keys and samples. There’s sing-along “oohs” and “whoa’s,” and choral hooks like that on “Landline” that will never cease being stuck in your head.”

"...Oberhofer definitely have something. While there is plenty of every home recording enthusiast's best friends, reverb and distortion, Oberhofer is not Wavves-style scuzz."  BrooklynVegan

"Oberhofer combines the delicately layered shouts of Animal Collective, the drugged-out guitarwork of Real Estate, and the thrashy percussions of The Dodos"  Flavorpill

"...specialises in deliriously catchy, lo-fi guitar pop the somehow manages to mix youthful exuberance, that slacker 'yeah, like, whatever' attitude with a weirdly accelerated neurosis"  Dazed And Confused

"Despite the kaleidoscopic whirl, there's an emphasis on straightforward lyrics; it's almost as if he's a 19-year-old kid who started writing music as a competitive freestyle rapper in the fifth grade, recently moved to New York after his family home in Tacoma burned down, and has songs bursting to get out of him."  L Magazine: 8 NYC Bands You Need To Hear

"Oberhofer make engaging indie rock à la Surfer Blood; they are spastic—with yelping screams and screeches reminiscent of bird calls (or Ezra Koenig), accompanied by loud, clashing drums and guitars, and softer instruments like toy piano and glockenspiel." Beyond Race Magazine

When your songs are too big to be contained: form a band. Maybe call it after your family name because you like the way it sounds (sh*t, if it worked for Bon Jovi then who’s to argue). Record those songs in the basement of your parents house in Tacoma. When that burns down, shake it off and move to New York. Find a new band to play with, start working on a symphony (no really, do it), mix your newfound formal training with the noisy exuberance of youth. Get raucous.

CIVET SHARPEN THEIR TEETH FOR LOVE & WAR DUE OUT FEB 2

LA rock band Civet have announced plans to release their fourth studio album, Love & War, via Hellcat Records on February 22.  Fans can check out the album's first single, "L.A. Nights," now at http://soundcloud.com/hellcatrecords/civet-l-a-nights. The album will also be available on vinyl at a later date.
Led by provocative sisters Liza Graves and Suzi Carmichael, Civet hold the torch once held by such groundbreaking female-fronted bands as The Runaways, Bikini Kill, L7, Hole and The Distillers, with the release of their fearless new studio album Love & War
"Recording the new record was very liberating; we knew what we wanted and went for it!" says Graves. "Our choruses are bigger and badder than the last record, coupled with blazing guitar solos & raw vocals everyone has come to love; that combination of Motörhead grit and ‘77 raw power.  There are various influences that can be heard on all the songs, so the whole record doesn't reflect one particular era or genre. We weren't afraid to pull from all scopes of the musical spectrum when writing this record."
After their Hellcat debut, Hell Hath No Fury, in 2008, Civet took the world by storm, touring Europe, Japan and North America extensively with such greats as Flogging Molly, H20, The Adicts, Dropkick Murphys, The Pogues and the Vans Warped Tour.  The album received rave reviews from critics and fans and created a whirlwind of press for the band, and anticipation for their follow-up has been mounting ever since.
Civet spent the last several years on the road refining the band's direction, and when it came time to record their follow up to Hell Hath No Fury decided to forgo an outside producer and record the album themselves.  "We knew the vision we had for this record better than anybody, so we decided to go for it!" says Carmichael.
And the result is Love and War, 14 daring and unapologetic tracks about relationships gone wrong, shattered dreams and their journey to where they are today.  With a matured sense of reality, the girls dug deeper than ever have before and translated their experiences over the past few years into soul wrenching lyrics and choruses on the new album.  "On this record, Suzi and I not only found our voice, but we rediscovered our punk rock ‘n' roll roots," says Graves.
Armed with Graves' trademark deep raspy vocals and Carmichael's incendiary lead guitars, Civet bare their teeth on songs like the brash party anthem, "L.A. Nights" and the angst fueled "Summer of Hate," and sink their claws into fans with feverous deploy on one of the band's best written albums yet.

NY Times: "“Subtext Is Deadly” featured an arrangement of blocky beats and chilly synthesizers, with Cale Parks, the band’s stand-up percussionist, singing terse lines about reluctant realizations. “Another Time” was livelier, unabashed in its new-wave borrowings."

NY Press: "...the three members of the band have already cultivated the sound, the look and the connections that, combined, could put a name not heard in the context of new music since the 19th century back into popular circulation."

Two weeks. That’s all BRAHMS had to come up with a support slot set for a sold-out Passion Pit show at Terminal 5 (capacity: 3,000). Never mind the fact that the Brooklyn-based trio officially formed a month prior, when rehearsals for Cale Parks’ solo project turned into another band entirely—one that was destined to soundtrack dimly-lit dance floors and bad decisions that seem oh-so-right.

“We had no idea what was gonna happen at the Passion Pit show,” says Parks, the band’s beat conductor and singer. “We just did it.”

And they haven’t looked back since, as guitarist/singer/synth-slinger Drew Robinson and bassist/cleanup keyboardist/singer Eric Lodwick joined Parks in the pursuit of the perfect pop song. With a twist or two, of course, whether we’re talking about the stuttering loops of “Subtext Is Deadly,” the sly New Order sample of “Toward the Ghost,” or the clanging chords of “Another Time.” (All of which are available as part of a self-produced demo atwww.brahmsband.com) And then there are the songs that’ll eventually end up on BRAHMSdebut LP. Believe it or not, they incorporate everything from manic piano house melodies to speaker-crushing dubstep loops.

“It’s pop, but it’s still grounded,” explains Robinson. “The beats and rhythms of the recordings are getting fiercer for one thing—just blowing out of the speakers.”

“Yep,” adds Parks, “We’re like Scott Walker plus an Electribe drum machine.”

Which kinda makes sense when you consider where everyone’s coming from. While Parks explored rich soundscapes with his solo records, Robinson is a Baltimore transplant who’s really into Chuck Berry and Buddy Holly—songs you’ll actually remember the next morning—and Lodwick prefers heady hooks and sounds that’ll make you smile up in the club…or basement show. Whatever works, really. After all, one of the reasons BRAHMS are so excited about their new material is that suffocating, intoxicating sense that anything can happen every time they step in the studio or on stage.

“As a drummer, I always found the rhythms in electronic music to be much more exciting than loud guitar noises,” says Parks. “Like I’d use guitars on my solo stuff but I’d just sample them. I was never into rocking out or anything. Now when Drew and Eric play, I actually get excited about it. The way they apply their style to electronic music falls right in line with exactly how I’m usually thinking.”

True Loves, Hooray For Earth debut LP out 5/3/11

"Hooray for Earth is one of those bands that throw the kitchen sink at you and somehow all the parts come together in a gorgeous patchwork of sound" -- LA WEEKLY

"MGMT, Yeasayer and Passion Pit have achieved estimable success...and this out-of-nowhere monster suggests that NYC outfit Hooray For Earth are capable of capturing some of this magic" -- PITCHFORK

WATCH "ROLLING/NECTARINE" LIVE FROM YOURS TRULY

These are anxious times. From unemployment and embattled governments to mysterious mass deaths of birds and fish, it's easy to wonder if 2012's apocalypse won't come a year early. It's heady fare for an indie rock record, but somehow the dense soundscapes from Hooray for Earth's True Loves find a way to float on thin air. "The record is really aggressive sounding, but soft in attitude," band leader Noel Heroux says. "It's a friendly record. I get more emotionally affected by extremes. I've really grabbed onto the positive, uplifting feelings in music that get me super psyched—but that can also come from sounds that are daunting and a little scary."

Coming out May 3, 2011, on Dovecote Records, True Loves builds on Hooray for Earth's acclaimed debut EP, Momo, and captures both the personal and universal anxieties that have such a footing in contemporary times. Lead single "True Loves" thumps along neck-snapping drums, awash with blips and synths, surprising breakdowns and Heroux's soaringly languid vocals. Pitchfork has already compared the track favorably to artists like MGMT, Yeasayer and Passion Pit, while saying that "all the right elements are in place...[it] floats along and pounds forward at the same time, and one way or another it wants to carry you along with it." Meanwhile, Stereogum labeled the band one of "CMJ's heroes," taking particular note of Hooray for Earth's "nimble but unpretentious guitars" and "sense of progressive psychedelics and percussive progressions." The sound that has indie-culture's gatekeepers fawning is one that springs directly from Heroux's imagination into a climactic reality.

"I don't write music with an instrument, I usually just get an idea of what the whole song sounds like in my head, kind of like an earworm that stays with you after listening to the radio. My task is to recreate what's stuck in my head in actual audible form, as quickly as possible," he says. "I wish I could just plug a cord into my head...I think that's why the music tends to be a little dense, because I think of all these things at once."

Heroux wrote, recorded, and produced about 90% of the new album, with bassist Christopher Principe and guitarist/live synthist Gary Benacquista peppering parts in a few sessions, and drummer Joseph Ciampini adding two days of rooftop drum tracking. Mixed by Chris Coady (Beach House, Blonde Redhead, Delorean, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, TV on the Radio), the album might as well be a direct link to the exciting mind of Heroux. Hooray for Earth's progression is apparent everywhere on the record and boasts exciting things for a band that has already appeared onstage with Mission of Burma, Holy Fuck, Surfer Blood, The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, Oh No Ono, and many more. Recorded over five weeks in New York, it's at once specific to the summer of 2010 and transcendent of time itself. Once again, a happy set of extremes.

"Most of the [recording] process is just me getting lost and trying to get things done. I feel like I'm on autopilot sometimes. I'll finish a song and wonder, 'When did that happen?' I don't spend a lot of time stressing about what instruments to use or what's missing, I just kind of let it be."
