Lil Bio on the Mint Chicks:
After playing a sting of house parties in 2001, power trio the Mint Chicks decimated many packed, sweaty living rooms for years before being discovered and signed by legendary New Zealand record label Flying Nun. Since then the band has released two EPs and two albums under the Flying Nun banner in Australasia and have become known for mixing hooks with modern noise rock and experimental punk rock music. Their sound, paired with their explosive live show, has put The Mint Chicks on the map. Their latest album release, Crazy? Yes! Dumb? No! marks their first release in the United States by indie label Milan Records in October 2008 on CD, digital and vinyl.
It's still a mystery today how Flying Nun even knew about this band, since they were holed up in living rooms and using people's stereos for vocal P.A's. Fast forward , the band has just dominated the 2007 New Zealand music awards, they also achieved a gold record and huge critical success in their home country of New Zealand. This success has come from an album that band members and brothers Ruban and Kody Nielson produced in their garage for next to nothing and mixed with their father. The album is a glorious example of musical D.I.Y. To this day, they have never been in a professional recording studio or met a producer.
After being one of the most talked about bands in their home country, the half-Hawaiian Nielson brothers have taken their dual citizenship and their drummer Paul Roper and moved The Mint Chicks to Portland, Oregon. The band is eager for new creative challenges and a fresh start. They’ve been able to play house parties again, which has quickly evolved into larger venues in Portland as well as shows in Austin at SXSW, Las Vegas and other key West Coast markets. It’s a far cry from back home in New Zealand and Australia where they have sold out headlining tours as well as having supported the White Stripes, Death From Above, TV on the Radio, Blood Brothers, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and the Black Lips. Now setting up in a basement in Portland, plotting world domination, The Mint Chicks want a Grammy for their Mum's mantelpiece.
