Yep! It’s that time of year again when Kiwis come over and challenge everyone for the best party at CMJ Award. No seriously, last year’s event was voted one of NME’s 10 coolest parties of the festival. This year will be no exception.From the country that gave us Lord Of The Rings, the atom bomb, Chris Knox, Flight Of The Conchords and vast amounts of genius....
The NZ Music Commission and Phase Five NZ Music have combined forces with CMJ to co-host the College Radio Mixer on the rooftop at the Delancey. MC’ed, yet again, by Rhys Darby aka Murray Hewitt (the NZ Cultural Attaché and manager in the HBO series Flight Of The Conchords), the party will include meat plate raffles and free 42 Below vodka.
Last years party included performances from Cut Off Your Hands, Liam Finn, The Brunettes and The Checks.

About the bands:
Rhys Darby is the genre-breaking, boundary leaping comic genius from New Zealand. Best known for his portrayal of Murray Hewitt – the cultural attaché from New Zealand in the hit HBO series Flight Of The Conchords. His sensational blend of sound effects, characterizations and askew observations has been reducing international audiences to a state of hysteria since he launched himself onto the world circuit in 2002. By combining stand-up story telling with physical theatre Rhys has developed a truly unique style of comedy performance. At last years NZ Music Commission showcase at CMJ he bought the house down with a performance both in character (Murray Hewiit) and on his own.. Everyone present? CHECK
The Naked And Famous create their own unique twisted pop concoction with big guitars, bigger beats, hooks aplenty and songs to die for. Glam meets shoegaze, via dreamy pop and electroid elements, in a collision of energy and originality that has seen the Auckland boy girl group topping the NZ Alt Radio Charts twice in 2008, with tracks from each of their two critically adored EPs.
An electro pop dance rock creation full of scuzzy guitar and QOTSA-esque riffs....

The Ruby Suns new album Sea Lion was intended to be a world music album, but reverb and psychedelic pop crept back in to create a unique mixture of exotic sounds, accomplished with an impressive array of instruments—from steel-string ukulele to djembe drums to pots and pans, all set upon a cosy cushion of synths and cassette samples. The Ruby Suns perfectly describe their wide-ranging influences with: “Pop music, noise, psychedelia, flamenco, South Pacific, southern Africa, home recording, hiking, travelling, animals, beaches, vegetarian food, especially falafel.
The band set forth to play the South by Southwest festival in Austin, TX in 2006, and from there launched a cross-country tour of the US. Or they attempted to - en route to a show in the Pacific NW, the motor home they were traveling in caught fire and burnt to the ground!! Destitute and on the verge of giving up the band rallied together and miraculously (presumably through some combination of borrowed equipment, the kindness of strangers, wire, smoke, and mirrors) managed to finish the tour and returned home in triumph.

| Bang! Bang! Eche! Make their youthful dance punk intentions as clear as can be in their ferociously catchy ‘4 To The Floor’. | Fresh from being nominated for the "Breakthrough Artist Of The Year” Award at the 2008 New Zealand Music Awards, Cut Off Your Hands self-titled single will also be featured on their much anticipated, Bernard Butler produced debut album, You and I, to be released in early 2009. Their new Happy As Can Be, is out on Frenchkiss Records this October. A carousel of layered melodies and rhyming couplets, soaring over an insistent, cavalry-like drumbeat, Happy… follows the successful Expectations, Cut Off Your Hands’ lead single released in last September. Expectations has not only received high rotation on Australia’s premier radio station, JJJ FM, but it recently featured as the Australian iTunes Single of the Week (SOTW). The track currently sits as the second largest download in iTunes SOTW history. |
