The Five Corners Quintet - Dynamic Finnish Dancefloor Jazz Sophomore Release" Hot Corner"

The Five Corners Quintet is a Helsinki-based jazz dancefloor outfit that updates the past with panache. Their sophomore release Hot Corner will be out on Milan Records on this Spring

"Top of the list for my hall pass from Drudgery would be Hot Corner, the latest from Finland's finest, the Five Corners Quintet. 'Hot Rod' kicks things off with some fried chicken guitars, easy going handclaps and loosey goosey piano giving modal jazz a shuffling, entirely different flair. 'Shake It' is the stormer with the tight interplay of Jukka Eskola on trumpet and Timo Lassy on tenor sax riding roilling rhythms from Antti Lotjonen and Teppo Makynen. Tuomas Kallio of Nuspirit Helsinki fame does all the arrangements and he should be especially proud of this one"

“About as hip as you can get without throwing your back out"
  ALL ABOUT JAZZ

In 2005, The Five Corners Quintet from Helsinki took the international dancefloor jazz scene by a storm. “Chasin’ the Jazz Gone By”, their debut for Ricky-Tick Records, a label that was initially conceived of as a vehicle for releasing the very first TFCQ vinyl single, proved out to be both an artistic and a commercial success story. For once and for all, the album proved that it is possible to look back while moving forward. The touch of producer-composer Tuomas Kallio was true to the golden era of modern jazz, and his vision in updating form rather than feeling resulted in music that is truly “postmodern jazz”, if there ever was some.

Three years, some 50, 000 sold records, and 100+ international gigs later, The Five Corners Quintet are set to return with their sophomore effort. The album, out on Milan Records in April is entitled “Hot Corner”, and everything about it indicates that the scene-leading Finnish ensemble has upped the ante. Rather, theirs will be the task of taking 2000 Century dancefloor jazz into another level.

Some things remain, of course. The sports axiom about not changing a winning team reigns true here, with a guest appearance by jazz vocalist par excellance, Mr. Mark Murphy, who also lent his golden voice to three tracks on the debut. This time around, however, it should come as no big suprise that a bunch of Finns manage to lure a living jazz legend to take part in their production, for
TFCQ face high expectations when it comes to their return in recorded form.

The enormously successful live band consisting of Teppo Mäkynen (drums/bandleader), Timo Lassy (sax), Jukka Eskola (trumpet), Mikael Jakobsson (piano), and Antti Lötjönen (double bass), also remains. On “Hot Corner”, however, the band takes a larger role in comparison to the first album. Tuomas Kallio is the “commander-in-chief” once again, but there’s a stronger sense of community also in the studio.

 The new sound of
TFCQ could be described as leaning towards the “Hot” of the album title more than the cool of their previously recorded work. Here, the impact of the live band is evident. Kallio’s compositions also move away from standard jazz into fresh new territories, where even the occasional flirt with genres such as rockabilly is to be expected. The EP preceding the album release already showed marks of the band “rocking” rather than “swinging”, and those directions are further explored on the upcoming album.

 One thing is certain:
The Five Corners Quintet have a knack at searching and finding new directions instead of following paths trampled by others. Of this, their new album “Hot Corner” is an ample piece of evidence.

DOVES ANNOUNCE NEW STUDIO ALBUM KINGDOM OF RUST SET FOR RELEASE ON APRIL 7TH

FREE EXCLUSIVE DOWNLOAD "JETSTREAM" AVAILABLE FOR 2 WEEKS ON BAND'S WEBSITE STARTING TODAY

U.S. Tour Expected To Hit Stateside Late Spring

Acclaimed British trio the Doves will release their much anticipated new studio album, Kingdom of Rust (Astralwerks Records) on April 7th, 2009.  Kingdom of Rust is the Dove's 4th studio album, their first since Some Cities debuted at # 1 on the U.K. album charts in February, 2005.  The Doves, comprised of Jez Williams, Andy Williams and Jimi Goodwin are offering fans a sneak peak by offering album track "Jetstream" as a free download for two weeks on their website www.doves.net.   A U.S. tour is expected to hit stateside in late spring.

Kingdom of Rust which is already being heralded by NME as 1 of the 10 most important albums of 2009 is the Dove's most sonically adventurous, intimate, cerebral, propulsive album to date.   The trio has been recording the album for the past 18 months, having ensconced themselves to a farm house-come-studio in backwaters of Cheshire, England.  They teamed up with long time Doves collaborator Dan Austin to co produce all but 2 tracks of Kingdom Of Rust. For the remaining 2 tracks; "10.03" and "Winter Hill," the group worked with ace producer John Leckie (Stone Roses, Radiohead).

The free download "Jetstream" is a stomping Doves classic in waiting. Fitted with a propulsive krautrock motorik, it inherits the bands dance DNA from their former Sub Sub extraction. It is with a searing intensity and the kind of brooding melancholic refrain that has become the Doves trademark that "Jetstream" blazes the trail for a new a new direction while simultaneously bearing all the hallmarks of an all time Doves classic.

Luaka Bop's Yonlu - Fader.com TODAY

The Fader
Freeload exclusive of Yonlu’s “I Know What It’s Like

“Teenage Brazilian songwriter Yoñlu aka Vinicius Gageiro Marques is about to release his debut album A society in which no tear is shed… on Luaka Bop in April, and it is full of quietly epic little pop songs like this one. He follows pretty directly in the footsteps of legends like Gilberto Gil and Caetano Veloso with softly sung and strummed odes to life, but the context is entirely flipped from what we all expect from Brazilian artists — carefree and convivial and just looking for the next good time. Yoñlu took his own life at the age of sixteen and these songs are the ones his parents found in his absence. That shouldn't take away from the beauty of some of his work, only that there will never be more of it.”

YONLU
Due out on Luaka Bop Records April 14th
A Society in Which No Tear is Shed is Inconceivably Mediocre

(adapted from an article in the March 2008 issue of Rolling Stone Brazil)

The story of Yonlu has many angles. Yes, it is a story about music – of the continuing heart-spilling tradition of lo-fi troubadours, of post-rock’s melodic imprints, of an ancient sadness lurking in the new-century and manifesting itself as modern Bossa Nova. But it’s more than that. It is a story about how such music comes to be in a world where technology and communication hide feelings and emotion, but songs can’t. It is about how the Internet can change an idea of what music means, of whom its creators are, and of what its creators can and can not do. More than anything, it is a story of a single young man, who lived all those angles and found it increasingly hard to do so -- but whose music transcended mere angles.

16 year-old Vinicius Gageiro Marques lived in the Southwestern Brazilian city of Porto Alegre, the only son of university professor and psychoanalyst Ana Maria Gageiro and second child of Luiz Marques, doctor of Political Science and Secretary of Culture of the state of Rio Grande do Sul between 1999 and 2002. He was a bright inquisitive young man, a polyglot adolescent who spoke French (he lived with his family in Paris from 3 until 7 years old), and wrote and spoke English without ever taking classes (he learned by watching TV). He began reading Kafka at 12, and at 13 dedicated himself to recording daily life using a photo camera. Vinicius also had an impressive musical aptitude. He demonstrated a knowledge and a critical sense in his analysis of pop music, always written in English and available on various websites. And he recorded hundreds of songs, playing guitars, bass, drums and sound effects in one of the rooms in his house he transformed into a studio.

But his focus had a dark side. “”He was serious, maybe too serious,” remembers his mother Ana Maria. “Very early on, I understood that his sensitivity to the world was also his weakness.”

On the afternoon of July 26th of 2006, 36 days before turning 17, Vinicius locked himself inside the bathroom of his apartment, and took his own life via carbon monoxide intoxication. An avid Internet user with the screen-name Yoñlu, Vinicius stayed on-line until the very last moments, and members of the suicide forum he frequented accompanied his every last step. Before locking himself in the bathroom, Vinicius wrote a letter freeing his family members from any guilt, explaining that his suicide could not have been stopped or imagined. He asked that his wishes be respected because his life was unbearable, he indicated the web address for his blog, thanked his parents for their support and recommended they listen to his music whenever they were sad, exactly as he would do. Even though he didn’t suggest they listen to the music he composed, he left them a CD with some of his songs.

On Vinicius’computer (which was being searched by Police investigators), his father discovered some of the precious sounds he had stored away -- the majority were his own songs. The music came with enthusiastic commentary made by Internet fans from around the world. Yoñlu, the Brazilian from Gay Harbour (that’s how he would refer to Porto Alegre), almost without any real friends in real life, was a popular virtual artist with fans from England, Scotland, Belgium, Canada and North Africa.

His recordings revealed just a fraction of his potential, his talent for experimentalism, and a capacity to create delicate melancholy melodies, something between Badly Drawn Boy, Radiohead, Tortoise and Nick Drake.

The music of “gringo” artists weren’t the influences on a kid contaminated by the universal conscience promoted through the Internet. Yonlu’s sound was enriched by his passion for bossa nova, his attention to the ruptures in Tropicalia (he considered Gilberto Gil the genius of the movement) and the influences of gaucho artists such as Vitor Ramil, his favorite, whose song “Estrela’ he covers here.

Between a poetic lyricism and general nonsense, the lyrics, written in English, help uncover who Viñicius really was. Topics like depression, inadequacy and suicide are scattered among the tracks selected for the disc. “Katie Don’t Be Depressed,” a musical pearl with steamy guitars and popular lyrics, is somber: “Katie don’t get depressed/it’s serious, I want to say, what the hell is that? / a thought across your mind/ and I see you twist and scream/ even though you have a hand to hold onto/ even though you were cast aside”;

In “Humiliation,” vocals, guitar and the incapacity to declare a passion, is pungent: “Why does this always end in humiliation for me? / I’m going to say why/ I’m going to die”; the sad ballad of carefully chosen lyrics “Suicide Song,” written one month before the fatal date, is haunting: “Now she has gone like everyone else I knew/ now my suicide is illuminated by the sunset/ if you want to know my opinion, it’s very sad/ I don’t think I will be/ present to see your face.”

Yoñlu is a disc that should have been a post card, but transformed itself into a testament. It’s the celebration of a life with the talent for a banquet that stopped at the appetizer. It’s a showcase of sound and poetry of the kisses that Vinicius never gave, the dreams he never realized, the anguishes he couldn’t get over, his passion for art and especially for music, like he expressed in the letter he wrote to his parents: “I believe that the right cadence and harmony at the right moments can awaken any sentiment, including happiness in the most somber moments.”

With time off between tours and preparing to record The Willowz fourth album with producer Stuart Sikes, Richie James Follin leader of The Willowz, has assembled a group of  musicians to record his first solo album, BATTLE

Dan Horne from Beachwood Sparks and Mezzanine Owls played pedal steel and acoustic bass, Juan Paul Caballero from Dios Malos played electric bass, Taylor Goldsmith of Dawes, Band of Horses played guitar, organ, and piano. Luke Paquin of Hot Hot Heat played guitar, Loren Humphrey on drums, Christof Certik from Winter Flowers played mandolin and Jennifer Argenti on the violin.

Starting out as a solo project Battle rapidly became a common ground for artistic creation. Richie James Follin has stripped away any imposing force and created a sound that captures the collectives mood. A mood that is free to move without guidelines. A mood that is felt and shared by all.

In the era of "singer songwriter on every block", RJF takes it a step into the future with a nod to the past. The process takes place in Los Angeles, CA. A recording studio in a ranch style house in Echo Park was the backdrop complete with vintage equipment such as plate reverbs and true echoplex audiophilia. A sort of "anti technology" approach not typical in the southern California region with studios in every bedroom, this record nearly adheres to a more campgroundesque-lets-all-play-together at a gathering and hope someone documented the songs. The gathering at Dan Hornes house/ studio took place on Independence Day, 2008 with free range chicken and ribs sizzling on the BBQ. Over the course of the day musicians showed up to put down their contribution to the album.

By days end Dan Horne had recorded 12 songs for Battle.

Track listing:
1. ROAST
2. PRIZE
3. BATTLE
4. HOST
5. CALLING
6. CIRCLE

11. ROSE
12. TRANSLATE
